Vint Cerf om det öppna Internet

Vinton Cerf upphör aldrig att fascinera. Jag har haft nöjet att träffa Vint vid ett flertal tillfällen (bland annat på Cainet 2000 där jag talade precis före honom) och han har alltid något nytt att komma med.

Den senaste gången jag hörde Vint tala var på IVA i slutet av 2009. Jag förstod då hur Vint lyckas hålla sinnet ungt. I pausen fanns det nämligen gott om kostymherrar, viktiga män från stora svenska företag, och “Internetexperter” av olika schatteringar som ville komma fram och hälsa, få en autograf i en bok etc. Vint fördrog allt detta med vänlig artighet men så plötsligt fick han syn på tre killar i 20-årsåldern som stod ett par meter bort och tittade. Omedelbart frågade Vint om de inte ville komma fram och berätta om hur de använder Internet och vilka utmaningar och möjligheter de såg. Kostymerna och experterna såg oroade ut men Vint inledde ett livligt samtal med killarna vars förtjusning över denna uppmärksamhet bara kunde jämföras med Vints förtjusning över att få prata med framtidens användare. Ett exempel att ta efter!

Nyligen fick jag ett tips om en artikel i Business Day där Vint talar om “Internet without borders”. Han listar tio frågeställningar som rör Internets framtid. Jag återger dem här i förkortat skick:

• On Google in China: “The longer the internet is present, the harder it will be ultimately to deny people access to information that they’re looking for.”
• On internet freedom for business: “We hope the network stays open enough that there can be more Googles and Amazons and eBays.”
• On the news industry:”Electrons seem a lot less expensive to distribute than atoms. Figuring out how to recast news in this online environment is a very hot priority.”
• On misinformation and the internet: “One of the things I believe to be most important about the internet is that the freedom to find and exchange information is so valuable we need to learn how to cope with the misinformation that’s present. This is not just information that’s wrong but information that some people consider unacceptable.”
• Origins of Internet growth: “In a sense, that openness to adding new networks, simply by building the appropriate piece of equipment to link it in to the rest of the network growth is exactly what’s driven network growth because you didn’t have to go and do … agreements with everybody in the world to figure out how to make your networks interwork with everyone else.”
• Biggest surprise about world wide web: “The thing that has surprised me more than anything about the world wide web is the rapid desire that people show to share what they know.”
• The threat of the internet: “The good thing is about the internet is everything is connected: the bad thing about the internet is everything is connected.”
• ‘Misinformed’ public: “I suppose you could argue it’s idealistic (but) I like to think people are capable of thinking critically if we help them learn how to do that.”
• Media online: “So I’m very reliant on a social network that might be of help identifying information that might be of interest or useful. And also to expose information that is inaccurate.”
• Multiple hypotheses: “… the thing that is so interesting about the internet, of course, is that there is so much information on it that almost anyone can find anything to justify any hypothesis.”
